National Police Commission to Crack Down on Misuse of Police License Plates

Phnom Penh: Ministry of Interior Sar Sokha has issued a directive to the General Commission of the National Police to enforce measures against the unauthorized use of police license plates, specifically citing their misuse by private individuals working in casinos or frequenting KTV establishments.

During the summary meeting of the Ministry of Interior's 2023 work results and the directional plan for continued work, held on February 29, 2024, Sar Sokha, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Interior, mandated that the National Police strengthen oversight and take corrective action against the improper use of police plates (MPs).

There has been an uptick in instances where police license plates, intended for official use, have been spotted on personal vehicles. Some individuals have been using these vehicles to travel to private employment at casinos or to park at KTV lounges, actions which are in direct violation of the law and have been causing public concern.

Sar Sokha took the opportunity to caution and urge all officials under the Ministry of Interior, particularly the police force, against such misuse of official license plates. He made it clear that police vehicles and their corresponding plates should not be loaned out for personal use and should be used strictly for professional purposes.

Furthermore, Sar Sokha advised the National Police Commissioner, as well as all Capital-Provincial Police Commissioners, to monitor the use of these plates vigilantly. He stressed that any unauthorized use should be addressed promptly by removing the plates and requiring the vehicle owners to fulfill their tax obligations as per the law. The directive affirms that these license plates are exclusively for official authority use and designated units.
